Preto Blindado (2021)

Artist Statement

"In 'Preto Blindado,' I draw on my own experience as a Black Brazilian living on the periphery of society to convey the contemporary aesthetics, humanity, and strength of Black Brazilian men. Using xylograph techniques, this side profile of a young man donning a face mask, a razor-edge hairline and designed part, and a calla lily neck tattoo, shows the subtle yet impactful ways in which young men assert their beauty. Presented without pretence or context, this image draws the viewer in and calls one to look and relook, each time noticing a different detail that challenges conventional notions of masculinity."
